This Web page provides important information to help you, as a new graduate student, to become comfortable with obtaining and using your e-mail account, personal web pages, network storage and connecting your computer to the Chemistry Computer Network.
Setting Up Your Computer and General Connectivity
Please make sure your computer is up to date with the proper anti-virus software, firewall, and operating system patches and updates before connecting to the network. Anti-virus software is required for all machines in the Chemistry Building. Access to the network by all computers that have viruses or malware on them will be disabled by the Computer Center.
The UW-Madison Department of Information Technology (DoIT) Tech Store Web site provides free security software as well as various software programs for UW-Madison faculty, staff and students. The downloads we recommend are in the sidebar (right).
Chemistry E-mail
All faculty, staff and graduate students in the Department of Chemistry are required to have a chem.wisc.edu email address.
- You may forward all your incoming chemistry e-mail to another address if you wish. Instructions are here.
- You can also change your e-mail password by logging (using SSH) into fozzie.chem.wisc.edu and typing passwd or stopping by room 9311A.
You can check your chemistry e-mail on the Web by going to mail.chem.wisc.edu.
- You may also use an e-mail client, such as Thunderbird. Instructions on how to configure various e-mail clients are available on our Web site.
- Instructions on how to customize your spam or junk mail filters are also available.
Network Password
Your network username and password allow you to logon to various machines in the building and to use network resources such as the file server.
- This password cannot be changed.
- Your network logon is also used to edit personal and group webpages. Please click here for more information.
Printers
Various departmental printers are available for use. Please click here for more information and instructions.
