Welcome to the Chemistry Computer Center's quarterly newsletter. In this newsletter, you will find information regarding:

Computer Center Web site Update
The Computer Center Web site, computing.chem.wisc.edu, has had some modifications to its navigation and organization. The Web site now features an easier to use drop-down navigation. Take a look and let us know if you have any comments or suggestions.
New Face at the Computer Center
Please join us in welcoming Alan Silver as our new Departmental Computer Systems Administrator. Alan will be filling the position previously held by Steve Barnet. Alan is originally from New York State and has 4-year-old twin boys. In his free time, he enjoys going to the farmer’s market and hiking in and camping at state parks. Alan previously worked at the Department of Biostatistics & Medical Informatics at the UW-Madison. Feel free to contact him at asilver at chem.wisc.edu or 3-4528.
Congratulations New Graduates!
Two of our Computer Center staff recently completed degrees from the UW-Madison. Congratulations!
- Gavin Edwards graduated this spring with a Bachelors degree in Computer Sciences.
- Kara Hartmann graduated this summer with a Masters degree in Life Sciences Communication.
Computer Classroom Scheduling
If you would like to schedule a class in the Computer Classroom for this Fall Semester:
- Contact Phill Bloedow, phill at chem.wisc.edu, 2-1483, to reserve the classroom. Scheduling is done on a first-come, first-served basis.
- If would like to get new software installed, send an e-mail to Comphelp, comphelp at chem.wisc.edu, at least five weeks before the beginning of the fall semester. This time is required to purchase software and licenses as well as to ensure that the new software is compatible with the current system. A list of software currently installed in the classroom is available here
- E-mail a spreadsheet with the students' names to classrosters at chem.wisc.edu at least two weeks in advance of the class start date. User names and passwords will be sent to the instructor.

Bohr Retirement and Replacement
As of June 1, 2006, Bohr has officially retired and has been replaced by nBohr (named for Niels Bohr). All data has been successfully transferred from Bohr to nBohr and all systems are now stable. nBohr is running Red Hat Enterprise Linux and has a dual core, Intel Xeon, 3 GHz processor with RAID1, 2GB of memory and a 250GB hard drive.
