Getting Connected
Adequate security precautions must be taken before devices can be connected to the chemistry department network. This includes all appropriate security updates as provided by the vendor as well as up to date anti-virus protection if necessary.
Anti-virus software is required for all Windows machines in the building (except in the case where a machine should have virus protection but cannot. For these machines, a firewall should be put in place or other precautions should be taken.) The Computer Center does not provide a firewall or network security for individual machines. DoIT provides free security software for UW-Madison faculty, staff and students (click here to download).
Each person or group needs to make sure that his or her own computer is up to date with the proper anti-virus software, firewall, and operating system patches and updates before connecting to the network. Connecting to the network without updates and anti-virus software could adversely affect all network users. Access to the network by all computers that have viruses or malware on them will be disabled by the Computer Center.
To avoid viruses:
- Update your virus definitions daily.
- Do not click on any links in suspicious emails (i.e., look for bad grammar, conflicting sender/content information).
