Filtering Spam: Mozilla Thunderbird for Macintosh

This page contains instruction on how to set the Mozilla Thunderbird email client for Macintosh to filter your chemistry department email for spam.

Instructions

1. Start Mozilla Thunderbird. In the menu, click Tools then Message Filters

2. Click New

Filter Name

3. Type a name for the filter (i.e., Junk). Next, select customize under the Subject selection menu.

4. Enter "X-Spam-Score" and click Add and then OK

5. Under the subject pull down menu, select X-Spam-Score. Enter the desired number of asterisks (e.g. *******) in the form next to "contains."

Please Note: Messages that contain a large number of asterisks in their headers are classified by X-Spam-Score to be spam. The greater the number of asterisks, the more likely the message is spam.

Some messages that are spam may be labeled as non-spam and vice versa. If this happens, the number of asterisks in this section can be increased or decreased based on your preferences.

6. Check the box next to Move to Folder:

7. Your email will now be filtered for spam. Junk mail will be placed in the Junk folder.
