Configuring Outlook 2002/2003 for LDAP address book lookups

This page contains instructions on how to configure Outlook 2002 and 2003 to access the Chemistry LDAP server for directory service information (i.e. chemistry email addresses and phone numbers).

Instructions

  1. Launch Outlook.
  2. Click on the Tools menu and select Email Accounts to start the Outlook Accounts Wizard.
  3. On this initial screen select the third item titled Add a new directory or address book. Then click the Next button.
  4. Next select the first item titled Internet Directory Service(LDAP), and click Next to continue.
  5. In the Server Name: field, type ldap.chem.wisc.edu and click on the More Settings... button.
  6. Clicking the More Settings... button might cause an Add E-mail Account warning to appear. Just click OK to continue.
  7. On the "Microsoft LDAP Directory" screen, click on the Search tab at the top.
  8. In the Search Base field, enter ou=people,ou=core,dc=chem,dc=wisc,dc=edu, and click the OK button.
  9. This service is now setup. Like the warning message said we need to restart Outlook before we can use this service, so close Outlook by clicking on File-->Exit.

To use the LDAP Directory Service in Outlook XP / 2003:

  1. Launch Outlook
  2. Click on the Tools menu, and select Address Book.
  3. From the drop-down list labeled Show Names from the: make sure that ldap.chem.wisc.edu is selected and close this window.
  4. Create a New message by clicking on File-->New-->Mail message
  5. On this new message, click on the To... button to open the Select Names Window.
  6. Click on the Find... Button in this Window to perform an LDAP query. Note: For Outlook 2003, you will need to click on the Advanced button then select 'Find'.
  7. Type the query in the First Name: and Last Name: fields, and click OK.
    Note:You should search for names using the "First Name" and "Last Name" fields and not the "Display Name" field. "Display Name" queries return with errors.
  8. Results will appear in the left side of the "Select Names" window.
  9. Address the message as normal by selecting the correct name on the left, and clicking the To:, CC:, or BCC: button in the middle to put the name in the field on the right. When finished click OK.
