Configuring Eudora (on Windows) for LDAP address book lookups

This page contains instructions on how to configure Eudora to access the Chemistry LDAP server for directory service information (i.e. chemistry email addresses and phone numbers).

Instructions

  1. Click on the Tools menu.
  2. Select Directory Services.
  3. Under the Protocols section, click on LDAP to highlight.
  4. Click on the New Database button.
  5. This will bring up a new window labelled "Modify Database," which should have four tabs along the top: "Network", "Attributes, "Search Options", and "Log."
  6. Click on the Network tab and enter a descriptive name for the server into the first blank (e.g. LDAP or Chem LDAP Server).
  7. In the "Host Name" field, enter ldap.chem.wisc.edu.
  8. In the "Port" field, the default value of "389" is correct.
  9. Click on the Attributes tab at the top of the window, and ensure that Return Listed Attributes Only is not checked.
  10. Click on the Search Options tab at the top of the window. In the field labeled "Search Base" enter: ou=people,ou=core,dc=chem,dc=wisc,dc=edu
  11. In the Word-wise search filter, enter: (&(cn=*^0*)(mail=*)
  12. Click OK in the "Modify Database" window.

This completes the configuration. To initiate an LDAP query:

  1. Inside the Directory Services window, underneath the "Protocol" area is the "Databases" area. This area will contain a list of servers that have been configured as Directory Services servers. Find the name of the server that you created above in this list, and place a check in the checkbox next to it.
  2. In the upper-left hand portion of the Directory Services window is the "Query" area. Enter the text of your query (the name you want to search for) into the field.
  3. Click the Start button.
  4. Results will appear in the area below.
