Central Laboratory
Our Central Laboratory houses department systems as well as systems for research groups. We have a large number of computers operating on several platforms, including MS Windows®, Mac OS®, and Red Hat® Linux. Most research computers at the Chemistry Computer Center run Linux.
Capabilities
Originally designed for mainframes and mini-computers, the facility currently houses approximately 200 PC class systems that perform a variety of functions that range from computational chemistry to delivering services to the department network. Currently we are utilizing about half of the power and cooling capacity of the room. The recent addition of a dedicated cooling coil for the room has improved cooling capacity. However, there is still some ongoing work in the rest of the building to ensure adequate year-round cooling.
If you would like to house machines in 9311, please talk to Hieu Tran (Tran at chem.wisc.edu) to ensure that adequate space, power, and networking are available to support those systems.

Citations & Acknowledgements
If any of your published research makes use of the facilities or services offered by the Chemistry Computer Center, please be sure to include appropriate acknowledgement and citations (see below). This not only provides us with helpful feedback as to which tools are useful, but helps our efforts to acquire future funding.
If you have used a research cluster, please use the following acknowledgement in any publications or presentations:
NSF Grant #CHE-0091916
There is also some acknowledgement due for the Intel gifts. A typical citation is:
Computational resources provided to the UW Chemistry Parallel Computing Center though NSF Grant CHE0091916 and gifts from the Intel Corporation are gratefully acknowledged.
For a list of publications that have used our facility, please see the publications page.
